Is in this region where is the heart of the Chilean original race: the mapuches. For that reason, towards the interior, in spite of several passed centuries, it is possible to find towns in which it seems the time has been stopped. Into resistance, the capital city of this region, Temuco, has become in a modern and full city of advances in the last years. In fact, it is the one that more economic growth has experimented. Temuco, the Capital of the Region, is located at 673 km. south of Santiago. The access way to the city is by 5 South Route Pan-American Highway. Buses depart from the principal stations of Santiago every hour. Travelling by bus takes 10 hours. LanChile, Ladeco, Avant Airlines also offer regular and daily flights. Travelling by plane takes 2 hours. This region has a rainy and temperate climate, and lacks of dry season. In summer, the average rainfall is considerably lower. During winter, polar temperatures are present.

San Carlos de Puren Fort
It was declared a national Monument in 1975. It is located in a 50 m. high headland, from where you can see Purén Valley. It dates from 1869. Mapuche caciques (chiefs) and the commander of the pacification troops agreed the construction the fort. It has a approximate superficies of 2,500 km2. It is surrounded by a palisade, and it has a footbridge and two surveillance fortified towers in each corner. This is the only fort that has been rebuilt in this region. White marble sculptures
It was declared a National Monument in 1986. Angol s Plaza de Armas is considered one of the most beautiful squares of Chile. There is a fountain in the central part of the square. In the corners of the fountain you can find 4 sculptures, which represent the four continents known at that time (1862): America, Europe, Asia and Africa. They were sculpted by Virginio Arias, and they are surrounded by trees like magnolio, cypresses and cedars.

Del Malleco Viaduct
It was declared a National Monument in 1990. It is located in the 567th km. of Panamericana Sur Highway, at 1 km. of Collipulli. It was built over the deep water ravine of Malleco River. Del Malleco Viaduct is one of the biggest metallic engineering works of Chile. It is 407.5 m. long and 97.6 m. high, between the rail and the water level. It has 5 extremely high towers, in whose corners you can see cylindrical columns crowned by beams that support the railway. It was designed by Victorino Lastarria and prefabricated in France. Its assembly took 3 years. It was inaugurated by the President J.M. Balmaceda on October 26, 1890.
